I read “Unconscious Bias in Schools” as part of a book club this summer with the school I have recently joined. It was an informative read, though similar in content to a few other texts I’ve read in similar committees within my old school district. I appreciate that these texts all dive into the history and systems that have long existed and allowed racism and racial injustice to exist in our country.
“Unconscious Bias in Schools” is definitely geared towards an administrator rather than an educator, but I think that was one of the reasons I got so much out of it. It was interesting to read how unconscious bias influences and effects actions taken by school leadership, due to the personal nature of many of the situations that arise. Addressing unconscious bias is hard work, but it has to be done.
This text is certainly a conversation starter and if you’re an educator, I highly recommend you read it. I didn’t find it as easy to get through as others I’ve read, but nonetheless, I feel that it has benefited me as a teacher, as I move into this new school year.
